Hathersage to Bamford Walk.

Hathersage – Bamford and return

A hopefully interesting walk between these two Hope Valley villages with a bit of a railway theme.

From Hathersage Station, walk down the Station Approach, cross the B6001 and go down Dore Lane which becomes Mill Lane. Just before the railway viaduct take the footpath on the left which brings you out on Castleton Rd. Cross, head west for about 200 yards and take the footpath on the right, cross the railway

Steps to cross over railway

(With care although I thought the road was scarier!) and up to Jagger’s Lane.Turn left and after 100 yards there is a footpath heading up The Hill. From the top you get a great view of the railway, including, as of Feb 2022, the work to install a passing loop which will enable more and faster Sheffield-Manchester journeys.

Hope Valley View

You will come to a track leading to Thorpe Farm on the left, which sells Ice Cream and other delights. Through the farm and across the fields where you may be followed by sheep.

Sheepbridge?

Across a rickety bridge (just a couple of planks really) and continue onto Sickleholme Golf Club. There is a demarcated footpath around the course and we strongly recommend you take it. As you approach the club house there is a sort of footpath crossroads – turn left here and down to Saltergate Lane.At the bottom, if you’ve had enough you can catch a bus or a train (no 272 bus or train between 13:00 and 14:00 though) and of you’re hungry Sickleholme Garage is right there on the T-junction, but if you want to complete the circular walk, take Mytham Bridge to Hope Road, cross the river and take the footpath all the way back to Leadmill Bridge, where you can take a footpath across the fields back to Dore Lane, or alongside the B6001 where you can drop in at David Mellor.
