We’ve noticed that a lot of the feedback we get from cycle tourists visiting the city is of the “we were trying to cross the city but we got lost” variety. We hope this page, which brings together some of our recommended routes to make through routes will make it a bit easier to navigate, at least in the North-South and East West directions. I’ve used quieter roads and off-road cycle routes, but would also say that with the exception of the Parkway, which cycles are banned from anyway, the A57 Mosborough Parkway and the Inner Ring Rd which has a parallel cycle route, few of our roads are particularly unsafe for cycling, even if they are not particularly pleasant.
South-North direction.
We’ve started this route at the Meadowhead roundabout, on the A61. You might have arrived here from Dronfield using our Sheffield- Chesterfield route, or from the Nottingham direction, veering off from Coal Aston using Dyche Lane. If you continue on the A61 you will arrive in the City Centre very quickly, but you will have to contend with congestion in Woodseats, Meersbrook and Heeley. Alternatively, cross the A6102 Bochum Parkway (Outer Ring Road) and head into the Norton estate. Take Little Norton Lane, then r. Norton Park Rd, then l. Norton Lane (care here as traffic is coming off the roundabout quite fast.)
There is a gentle climb then take a left on the corner and a short shared use section to get you onto Bunting Nook. Follow this pleasant semi-rural road, running alongside Graves Park, to a left on Hemsworth Rd and an immediate r. onto Warminster Rd.Resist the temptation to plunge down Warminster Rd to the bottom, and instead turn right onto Mount View Rd, at the Sportsman Inn, then left onto Woodland Rd turning into Lees Hall Rd, Follow this through to the end (nice switchbacks) and then turn right, through the bus gate onto Carfield Ave. Take this road down to l, Meersbrook Rd, through the traffic calming feature and left onto Albert Rd. Take this down to the bottom, cross Chesterfield Rd with care (there’s a ped xing on your right if you’d rather walk across) under the railway bridge and right onto Saxon Rd. Follow the bike route through to Fieldhead Rd and take the right turn onto Glover Rd. This leads onto the bike route on Asline Rd, through the park and past James bike shop, and onto Shoreham St. Carry on across the Inner Ring Rd on the bike facility, and turn left at the next lights onto Matilda St, then right onto Sidney St (Cycle contraflow lane>>Brown St>>Paternoster Row.)
East-West Direction (to be added)
