The Best Electric Bike

(e-bike/ebike/eBike)

The best bicycle of any type is the one that fits you properly, and so is comfortable to use and efficient when used for your needs in your locality/terrain. It will be reliable, safe and readily serviceable/repairable

(and good value for money, particularly when considering longer term ownership/resale value).

Exactly the same considerations apply to ebikes, which are basically beefed up bicycles with a matched drive system added – that matched system being a Controller, a Motor, a Battery and, essentially, its matching charger.

The bottom line:

The e-bike that most readily ticks all these boxes will be one from one of the bigger manufacturers that is fitted with a good quality drive system that you can readily have serviced and repaired locally.

If you are considering purchasing an e-bike, you may like to kick off by doing some initial research, and a good place to start is https://ebiketips.road.cc/ .

The most convenient way to get one of these better quality bikes, well screwed together with good quality components, is at your local retailers, stating what you want from the bike and from them (the right bike for the job and good backup/service and repair availability) and try out/compare what they can offer.

Even if you don’t end up purchasing a bike at the end of this process, you will be clearer about which type of bike will best meet your needs (and maybe also what those needs actually are!) and what sort of cost you are realistically looking at.

Experience suggests the overall cost will likely be in the region of £500-1000 more than you initially thought/hoped, even before you add the essential super high security lock or two, plus luggage solutions and the gear/apparel to make rides something to look forward to in all conditions if you wish.

In practice then, in the Sheffield area at least, you will be looking to buy an e-bike from direct brand dealers with local shops like Trek, Giant and Decathlon, or from shops like JEJames, Evans, A Different Gear, Tony Butterworths, Halfords etc selling and servicing a range of e-bike brands with proprietary propulsion systems like Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang, Brose, Fazua and Mahle.

(Just to confuse matters, some big manufacturers use versions of these systems under their own names – eg Giant use Yamaha, Decathlon use Brose, Specialized use TQ, Orbea use Mahle etc – but they are all good quality integrated systems).

If you do end up buying online, check if someone locally can service/fix it first.

So do your research, and be prepared to probably spend more than you initially hoped for a bike you’ll love to ride and won’t end up languishing in your shed.
